πŸ•ΈοΈ A personal collection of traditions, memories, photographs, and little pieces of Halloween magic. πŸ•ΈοΈ

This is my personal page of the Halloween shrine where I share my own traditions, October memories, past costumes, and photographs from Halloweens past.

πŸ•― TRADITIONS πŸ•―

These few things mold(ed) my Halloweens growing up and into the present. They're always changing as people come and go.

✦ Trick Or Treating Tradition

When I was little my mom would take me throughout a few full blocks of our suburban neighborhood.I grew up in the suburbs in a place that was usually pretty warm around Halloween, so we were safe from having to wear sweaters or jackets with our costumes. We used to stop when my pumpkin bucket was full, but then when I got smart about it and brought a pillowcase instead, so we only stopped when my feet hurt or when the cold wind started to come out. We'd walk through the neighborhood and look for the crowds and/or really decorated and lit up houses to hit up- back then, almost everyone had Halloween decorations in their yard and lights on the porch to let you know they were "open" to trick-or-treating.

✦ Eventually we'd end up at the neighborhood park...
Eventually we'd end up at the neighborhood park that was tucked tucked away with no major street access and we'd stay there for a little while playing games, doing the park's costume contest, and taking pictures with the people we recognized or with whoever had a cool outfit. The park had a walk-through haunted house in the recreation center and a bunch of family friendly Halloween games set up on the basketball court. Most of the kids that I went to school with all lived in the same few blocks so we'd run into each other here. It stayed open until 9pm, but people stopped opening their doors around the same time, so we'd all have to leave "early" to finish up the routes back home. This was about the point where my feet were whining and I was ready to be done, so it worked out well.

✦ Decorating These Days

The decorations at my house currently go up in the first week of October, or at the end of September depending on when the weekend falls. We have a 164ft string of purple and orange lights that goes across the front of the house, around a tree, across the yard to another tree, and wraps around that one to finish. Then there's a purple lighted rope spiderweb that attaches from the room to the base of the nearby tree, and it hangs across the walkway to our door. The problem we had with it last year is that it's ideal for people who are under 5ft tall, but otherwise you're ducking to go beneath it. This year it's going to get attached to the tree branches instead of the base so that we still have the lighted canopy to walk under, but with less of the hunching. I'll get another light web to put in the yard from tree branches to ground so that the web effect isn't lost from people walking/driving by. We don't carve pumpkins anymore (not enough time to make it happen) but we set out decorative plastic and metal ones on the fence or in the windows, as well as a small string of jackolantern lights in the front window for effect.

✦ Lastly we put out "flaming"...

Lastly we put out "flaming" solar lights in the front yard to make a new walkway up the grass in case we have too many cars in the driveway blocking the walkway access. We got those on Amazon and they're actually pretty good!

At my work we have floating candles that get strung up in the hallway between treatment rooms. My treatment room has black garlands with orange flowers strung between the wall sconces, with purple string lights and metal bat string lights hanging from them. I usually have a full candy bowl for my clients and a Halloween Squishmallow (one of my bats or sometimes the witch cat) in there as well. I'm limited on countertop space so I have to be clever with how I set things out; all of my countertop candles go onto the upper shelf for ambience with a black and orange garland sat in front of them, and the candy bowl takes up the space they had prior. A black and purple tinsel garland gets draped over the door. We're fun at my work. I also start coming in with Halloween makeup in the last week of October, but I'm never at work on Halloween. It's a personal rule that I take the day off and keep my night time options open for parties, theme parks, events, etc.

✦ Work Traditions

I worked at a Halloween themed amusement park as a "monster" for years. My friends and I would come from different counties to work at the park and would always rent out a hotel room for a month (paid by the week) and split it between about 6 of us so that we could either walk to work (rarely) or all pile into one car and drive together. This also made going to the local 24-hour restaurant after work or to after-parties a lot easier. At the end of the night that restaurant would be packed with people in T-shirts, jeans, and Halloween makeup at 3am- everyone fresh from work and an hour away from sleeping all day and doing it again tomorrow. This was usually the only "real" food we ate during the work week; at work we'd live off PixyStix, nachos, Monster, and an ultra sugary local berry punch. We needed all the sugar to keep up with running/jumping/climbing/sliding after all the screaming people.

✦ One year I was in a mask...

We'd all get to work and trudge into the back entrance of the park, which lead us through an area that was still populated with daytime guests before the park closed temporarily for the nighttime switch. We'd go into the employee area, get our timecards punched, check out our costumes from the warehouse wardrobe, get our makeup done, and then hang out up until it was time to go to whichever area we'd been assigned at hire. I was always a maze monster, so I'd go to the same maze every year with many of the same people. We all became very close, seeing each other for 8 hours a day, 5 nights a week, and at our absolute worst (dirty, sweaty, broken, sick, tired...). It breaks down a lot of social barriers between people to all go through that kind of daily workout, the yearly illness (because someone always got really sick from the fog machines versus the weather change, and two handfuls of other people came down with a milder version of it), so we get really close really fast.

Every Sunday after work was over we'd have a party somewhere- this was monster-wide across the park, not just our area, so there'd be about a hundred or more people at each event. The first weekend was always at a bowling alley for Zombie Bowling (named for how filthy we were and how we walked after our first week of running/jumping/etc. all night); the second was broom ball at a hockey rink; third was a skate rink for Monster Skate; fourth was a house party, designated at a different house each year; fifth was on the last night of work and was a banquet hall rented out for "awards" and a last hurrah.

✦ Halloween Nights Past

As a kid, Halloween was for trick-or-treating. That's it. That was the mission, that was the goal, that was end-game. Fin.

As an older teenager and young adult I spent it working at the Halloween themed amusement park where I was a monster. We worked from late September into early November/the weekend after Halloween, so there weren't any big events that I could get to. Most of the time someone from work would have a house party that we'd all show up at (and there were a LOT of us), but unless Halloween was on a Sunday, we had to work the next day and could only be there for a few hours. Most of the time the party was scheduled for the weekend before so that we could hang out, drink, and spend the night where we landed; whoever hosted would have blankets all over the house for us to curl up in on couches, chairs, the floors, beds if spare rooms were available... and we made it work. We were essentially a bunch of spooky carnies and could be totally comfortable with 20 people sleeping in the same room.
Honestly, these parties were the absolute best and I miss that they aren't around anymore. Most of us "retired" from that job and that was that.

✦ Mid 20s on, Halloween was at the goth clubs...

Mid 20s on, Halloween was at the goth clubs where I worked as a cashier/cash runner between the door and the bar/DJ assistant (I was not the DJ). We'd get to dress up as much or as little as we wanted and the clubs were open until 2:30am. The biggest issue with themw as getting to them, because traffic on Halloween going into the city was brutal; I'd have to leave at 6:30pm to guarantee that I'd be there by 9pm (I was only 20 miles away, for reference), and sometimes it was just squeezing in right on the dot.

But the parties here were decadent and people usually went all out with their outfits, whether they were costumes or more of elaborate gowns and cloaks. I looked forward so much to these events and the pictures that came from them. Sadly a lot of the clubs went by the wayside after the pandemic a few years ago, and now they're pretty empty compared to how tightly packed they were. We're also over a decade older and people have new jobs and families, so there's that.

For a while in my 30s Downtown Disney was the place to go for Halloween, as they had a costume walk where people could dress up and kids could trick-or-treat at the stores in the shopping stretch. You could dress up as much as you wanted as long as you weren't posing as a character actor for the park or drawing lines or too much attention. Unfortunately Disney rescinded this event to where only kids 14 and under could come in costumes (and their parents could dress up with them, but no kids = no costumes). We were almost turned away at security when we found out that they were implementing this. They had a good thing going back then. I'm sure they're not hurting for numbers, but I know a lot of people were disappointed when this became the new D-law.

These days I stay home, hang out and watch movies in a group Discord with a bunch of online friends, pass out candy to the few trick-or-treaters that we get, and be on a MMORPG playing their Halloween event. If I get antsy to get out there are a handful of amusement parks with Halloween stuff going on that I can get to within 2 hours (costume-free). Not sure what my plans are for this year; we'll see the night of what I feel like doing.

Random Haunt Work Memories

October 2002

One year I was in a mask rather than in makeup, so I could "get away" with a little bit more because people didn't have a face to match to it. I decided that, in such a "serious," spooky, ultra gothic vampire maze, I was going to be the comic relief. I'd be on all fours, on my kneepads with my metal fingered gloves, tapping my fingers on the ground while waiting for people to pass the room I was in. I wasn't blocking the way, but they wouldn't come into the room that I was in. If they refused to come through, I'd turn sideways to them (on all fours), lift my leg up, and "pee" on them. Someone in the back of their crowd would call it out, "Hey, he just peed on you! Haha!" and they'd all laugh and inch forward a bit. Sometimes I'd stay "peeing" for a while and shake my leg at the end of it for added effect. I'm there all night, you know? Can't be serious all the time. πŸ˜‚

✦ Another time I was sliding...

Another time (same year) I was sliding down a hallway with a downgrade; the figure of the walkway was like a U that was slowly ascending. My intention was to slide down the "bottom" of the U, then jump up and Liu Kang kick the wall ahead of me to make a loud bang, hopefully scaring the people on the other side and putting on a show for the ones that could see me. Well... I succeeded in the first part. I popped up from the slide, double kicked the wall, but instead of the wall rebounding, I went through it. I went through the plywood and got stuck at my hips. The people on the other side saw my feet, and the people at the long end of the U saw me stuck. I was literally pinned with nothing other than a broken wall to try to push myself back out from, when I saw another monster (co-worker) coming around the bend. I started waving frantically, my dramatic flouncy costume sleeves making a show as I pointed at them, trying to get their attention. Some of the guests started waving at him, which turned his attention to try to scare them. He climbed up onto some boulders that were on the side of the walkway like he was stalking, and then he saw me. And fell off the rocks into the gated off exhibit area. At that point I threw my hands up and played dead. THANKFULLY someone who had progressed through our maze mentioned to one of our security people that there was someone stuck in the wall, and security came with another coworker to pull me out by my arms. In front of the next group of guests. Fun times.

Another October Night

October 2016

I was dressed up and on my way to a club, and stopped by my mom's house on the way (forgot why). I parked in the driveway and was taken aback by the huge orb weaver spider hanging from the tree very close to my car. That thing was an absolute unit, and reflected silver from the street light. It had small twigs in its web so I called it the Boneweaver. I took a wide walk around it so that I wouldn't have to walk underneath it, did whatever I needed to do in the house, and then left. Except I realized that I'd had cash in my lap in the car for my entry fee and parking... and it was no longer there. So I drove back... and my money was under the Boneweaver. I went into the house and recruited my mom for this task, who decided that a broom was the proper response. She told me to go ahead and get the money, and she'd bat the thing away if it decided to make a drop for my head so that I didn't stand up into it.

✦ Guess how that went wrong?

Guess how that went wrong? I followed her plan, but she didn't hold the broom up to ward off the beast. She didn't even stand close enough to do that. Instead, she javelined the broom bristles-first at the damned thing while screaming and ran into the house. I got hit by a broom and was on the ground thinking she'd knocked the spider out of the tree and onto me, so I was screaming too. All of this was happening at 10pm at night. It's a wonder the cops didn't show up.

A scenic set up from the Halloween park I used to work at. It was interactive; if you had a haunted lantern nearby, this area would light up and become animated.
